The Fraunhofer Society (Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e. V.) is Europe’s largest application-oriented research organization.

More than 67 institutes spread throughout Germany focus on different fields of applied science. It employs around 23 000 people, mainly scientists and engineers. The Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS is one of the largest research institutes of the Fraunhofer society and employs more than 550 scientists and engineers. It conducts applications-oriented research in the field of high-performance ceramics. The three branches of the institute, located in Dresden and Hermsdorf (Thuringia), jointly form the largest institution for ceramics research in Europe.

As research and technology service provider, Fraunhofer IKTS develops ultramodern high- performance ceramic materials, industrially relevant manufacturing processes, prototype components and systems in complete production lines, through to pilot-scale production. At its heart are market-viable ceramic solutions for mechanical and plant engineering, energy and environmental technology, optics, medical technology as well as electronics and microsystems technology. A unique competence of Fraunhofer IKTS is the transfer of innovative developments in the field of material science into demonstration plants and semi-industrial patterns.

Fraunhofer IKTS is active in following business fields:

  • Materials and Processes
  • Mechanical and Automotive engineering
  • Electronics and Microsystems
